Radial Extracorporeal Shockwave (r-ESWT) is an evidence-based treatment that involves passing low energy pressure waves into damaged tissue to increase blood flow and stimulate repair. This helps reduce pain and allows the body to restart its own natural healing process. In practise we use the STORZ MEDICAL MP50 Supplied by Venn Healthcare.
Shockwave Therapy is widely used within sports therapy, physiotherapy, osteopathy, sports medicine, podiatry and orthopaedics due to its fast pain relief and increased mobility. It is clinically proven, non-invasive and is used by high-professional sports bodies. It’s a really great addition to our list of services!
Many pathologies! Plantar fasciitis, myofascial pain, acute/chronic/calcific tendinopathies such as achillies tendinopathy, greater trochanteric pain syndrome, lateral epicondylopathy and calcific rotator cuff tendinopathy, muscle strains and ligament sprains, however not limited to.
In chronic conditions alone an overall success rate ranges from 65-80% when other therapeutic treatments have been unsuccessful. Alongside appropriate rehab and after care advise this treatment can be a good option for pain relief and recovery.
Shockwave is most successful when used across 3-5 sessions, 7-10 days apart. This can be managed session by session. NSAIDS are not to be used post treatment for 48 hours.
Shockwaves can present with some discomfort during a treatment, but this should be very tolerable. Levels of energy can be adjusted accordingly during a treatment. Shockwave therapy can provide analgesic effects often resulting in immediate pain relief post treatment.
We highly recommend this treatment meaning that it is very safe. Shockwave therapy is UK NICE and US FDA approved both providing guidance on many of the indications. The treatment is only performed by qualified therapists and is largely risk free.
